The Utes brought to the desert a high powered offense and dominating defense to go along with the tens of thousands of Utah fans in the sellout crowd that enjoyed their first unbeaten season since 1930. The Utes scored on their first five of seven possessions, baffling Pittsburg with spread formations, shuffle passes and option plays. Quarterback Alex Smith set a Fiesta Bowl record with a 78% completion rate and threw for four touchdown passes. Not to be outdone, the Ute defense sacked Pitt's quarterback a staggering nine times, also a Fiesta Bowl record. The match-up of two of college football's most storied programs promised to be an instant classic. Ohio State saved its best offensive showing of the season for their last game as they rolled through Notre Dame for over 600 yards of offense and 34 points with exciting highlight after highlight. For a football program that had built a reputation on three yards and a cloud of dust, these Buckeyes proved that speed helps make big plays both an offense and defense. Quarterback Troy Smith, the offensive MVP, used all his weapons as the Buckeyes scored on plays of 85-yards, 68-yards, 56-yards and 60-yards to blow past Notre Dame. 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl: West Virginia Vs. Oklahoma (Widescreen) : On their way to the Fiesta Bowl title, the West Virginia Mountaineers never lost focus. In one of the biggest games in WVU history, the stars of the ninth ranked Mountaineers shined in beating the fourth ranked Oklahoma Sooner's, 48-28, in the 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The Mountaineers rallied behind interim Coach Stewart, who would be named the school's permanent head coach the day after the game. West Virginia played 60 minutes of inspired football while overcoming the loss of their star tailback, Steve Slaton, to a leg injury in the first quarter. The Mountaineers' explosive offense responded by scoring 28 second half points on just 12 plays. Racing for 349 yards and three touchdowns, West Virginia ran at will against an Oklahoma defense which had allowed less than 92 rushing yards per game during the season. West Virginia quarterback Pat White led the charge with 327 total yards and two touchdowns to earn the game's offensive MVP honors. 1989 Fiesta Bowl National Championship : Irish Return To Glory With 11th National Title Coming into the 1989 Fiesta Bowl, Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz insisted that his team couldn't pass the ball against West Virginia. Irish quarterback Tony Rice, simply smiled and agreed. But by the end of the game he had outplayed Mountaineer quarterback Major Harris by completing 7-of-11 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns. "For a guy who wasn't supposed to be able to throw, he looked all right to me," said West Virginia coach Don Nehlen. With Rice running and throwing to targets like freshman Raghib "Rocket" Ismail and flanker Ricky Watters, Notre Dame went on to win the game 34-21. The Fiesta Bowl victory gave the Irish their first national championship in 11 years and completed Notre Dame's return to the top of college football. Boise State : The 2007 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl had it all - drama, trick plays and an overtime 43-42 victory by underdog Boise State over Oklahoma in one of the most spectacular finishes in college football history! The Broncos appeared to be finished when Oklahoma cornerback Marcus Walker intercepted a Jared Zabransky pass and returned it for a touchdown to put the Sooners ahead 35-28 with a minute remaining. However, on fourth and 18 on the ensuing drive, Zabransky hit Drisan James, who lateraled to Jerard Rabb, who scampered in for a touchdown with seven seconds remaining in regulation. Overtime started with Oklahoma scoring on an Adrian Peterson touchdown run. The Broncos answered with Vinny Perretta's fourth-down touchdown pass to Derek Schouman. With Boise State down by a point, Boise State head coach Chris Petersen decided to go for the victory.
